About Presenter
Melanie P. Graham
My name is Melanie Graham and I was a high school teacher in a school district with a high percentage of Native students in NW Washington State for twenty-four years. Although I was aware of the existence of mandatory Indian boarding schools in both US and Canadian history, it wasn’t until I retired and began to study and listen to indigenous people all over North America that I learned how deeply those schools have negatively impacted Native people. If I had understood this better, I would have approached teaching differently. This website is my effort to support both educators and Native people in the future.
